Statistics in Criminal Justice
The aim:
1. To acquaint students with methods of data presentation and description.
2. To present the most-used methods of basic statistics.
Acquired knowledge:
1. The student characterizes the basic statistical methods for the acquisition, description, presentation and analysis of statistical material.
2. The student presents the basic statistical measures used in the description of the structure and diversity of the community, and studies of the relationship of phenomena taking into account the nature of the material obtained.
Acquired skills:
1. The student selects the methods and measures for specific problems and research goal.
2. Student calculates statistical measures using also appropriate software.
3. Student analyzes statistical data on mass socio-economic phenomena and processes, using appropriate statistical terminology.
Acquired social skills:
1. Student is able to critical judgment based on data analysis.
Course contents:
1. Classes on the E-EDU platform – introduction, project work, lecture and test elements – overview.
2. Statistics as a science and its basic concepts.
3. Preparation and presentation of statistical material. Analysis of the population structure. Descriptive characteristics of the distributions – measures of central tendency.
4. Analysis of the population structure – Descriptive characteristics of the distributions – measures of dispersion, asymmetry and concentration.
5. Analysis of population structure – graphic presentation of data- box plot.
6. Work in the Gretl program – data entry, calculation of statistical measures, Gretl session.
7. Analysis of interdependence of phenomena – correlation coefficient.
8. Analysis of interdependence of phenomena – simple regression.
9. Analysis of the dynamics of socio-economic phenomena.
