English Language for Public and Private Law
The aim:
1. Broadening language competence in the area of legal English, widening vocabulary base, training to draft official, legal texts in English.
2. Gathering necessary and useful information about common law system and civil law system.
3. Being knowledgeable about terminology used in public law and typical legal institutions of public law.
4. Being knowledgeable about terminology used in private law and typical legal institutions of private law.
Acquired knowledge:
1. Student is competent to interpret legal texts.
2. Student knows basic legal institutions of public and private law.
3. Student has a good command of legal vocabulary concerning the area of public law as well as private law.
Acquired skills:
1. Student freely formulates ideas and opinions in legal jargon, properly interprets statements of others formulated in formal, legal language, uses relevant grammatical structures.
2. Student is competent to write an essay on topic concerning public or private law matters.
3. Student is competent to deliver a complex speech related on legal matters.
4. Student is competent to draft a simple contract.
Acquired social skills:
1. Student is able to give his opinion in public about particular problem derived from legal act, court ruling or other legal text.
2. Student is able to take active part in a discussion on various topics related to law and support his position.
Course contents:
1. Essential words used in the legal profession.
2. The Study and Classification of Law: Public Law – Private Law distinction. Common Law System and Civil Law System.
3. Constitutional law: Legislative, executive, and judicial branch. Rule of law and separation of powers, sources of law, law-making
4. Criminal law: The concept and structure of an offence. Types of offences; Human rights.
5. Contracts: Principle of freedom of contracting. The elements of a contract. Standard contractual clauses. Contract negotiating and drafting. Performance and breach of a contract. Remedies.
6. Tort law.
7. Employment law.
