Victimology

The aim:
1. The aim of the course is to present students with the subject of victimology research.
2. Paying attention to the place of the victim in legal regulations, both in Poland and abroad.
3. Indication of the application of legal provisions in the field of protection of victims of crime and their rights in practice.

Acquired knowledge:
1. The student defines the basic concepts of victimology.
2. The student reconstructs the basic mechanisms governing the relationship between the perpetrator and the victim and classifies the victims of crime.
3. The student lists the basic rights and obligations of the injured party in a criminal trial.

Acquired skills:
1. The student analyzes selected facts in terms of victimization factors and the perpetrator-victim relationship based on the knowledge of victimology.
2. The student is able to recognize and describe the impact of individual legal regulations on the situation of the victim.

Acquired social skills:
1. The student understands the need for continuous professional development and is aware of improving their own knowledge and skills.
2. The student shows sensitivity to the problems of victims of crime and is able to overcome stereotypes about victims of crime and show sensitivity to victim-generating situations.

Course contents
1. The concept, origin, basic concepts of victimology.
2. “Profile” of a crime victim – the concept and method of creation; profile of a typical victim of selected crime types.
3. The relationship between the perpetrator and the victim; The significance of the victim’s person for determining the psychophysical profile of the unknown perpetrator of the homicide.
4. The role of the victim in the crime, the victim as the perpetrator of the crime; contribution of the victim, provocation – legal, criminal and criminological aspect.
5. So-called victimless crimes.
6. The role of the victim of crime in criminal proceedings; rights of victims of crime; so-called victim’s charter.
7. Stereotypes regarding the perception of the victim of crime in general, victims of various crimes and their impact on the attitudes of people in contact with the victim.
8. Perspectives on victimology.
